At Totally Truffles we have developed procedures that will limit the risk of commercial failure and improve truffle growers productivity.
Inoculation To ensure our trees are infected we are have developed bespoke methods of chemical elicitation to enhance the likely hood of a successful infection. Moreover, trees are grown under aseptic conditions to reduce competition between desired and unwanted mycorrizal fungi.
Truffle Typing Microscopic analysis is then undertaken to identify trees with infected roots. DNA is extracted from infected roots and authenticated using a sensitive and very specific molecular technique (PCR-sequencing). This type of molecular analysis allows us to accurately type a given truffle species (see below for details). Our technology can be used to authenticate commercial truffle products, infected tree roots and to measure the mycelium load contained within soil samples, as orchards are established. We are currently developing field-able molecular tests to restore confidence in truffle production.
Micro nutrient status of soil samples can be assessed (500 g top soil is required for each sample to be analysed); We will determine the the nutritional quality and alkalinity of each soil sample. Nitrogen, Phosphate, potassium free calcium, magnesium and iron concentrations will be determined as well as the pH.
