This tree is very productive and hardy in Northern European climates and suited to chalky soils with a high pH; the seeds were sourced from a reputable British supplier.This tree commonly grows with mycorrhizal fungi; we can supply these trees hosting Tuber aestivum (black summer / autumn truffles).

Trees ranging from 6 to 18 months old can be purchased subject to availability; postage costs may vary.
Holm Oak (Quercus ilex)  is a medium-size tree 20–27 m tall with finely square-fissured blackish bark and leathery evergreen leaves. The leaves are dark green above and pale whitish-grey with dense short hairs below. The leaf shape is variable, the adult leaves are entire, 4–8 cm long and 1–3 cm broad, while those on the lower branches of young trees are often larger (to 10 cm long), and are toothed or somewhat spiny - possibly as protection from grazing animals. In this, the foliage resembles that of the common European Holly Ilex aquifolium, and this resemblance has led to its common and botanic names. The name ilex is originally the classical Latin name for the Holm Oak, but was later also used as a botanical genus name for the hollies. The flowers are catkins, produced in the spring; the fruit is an acorn, which matures in about six months. This tree is very productive and hardy in Northern European climates and suited to chalky soils with a high pH; the seeds were sourced from a reputable British supplier. This tree commonly grows with mycorrhizal fungi; we can supply these trees hosting Tuber aestivum (black summer / autumn truffles).

Beech (infected with Tuber aestivum) / An ideal novelty gift for the truffle enthusiast

Trees ranging from
 40-60 cm  can be purchased subject to availability;

The European beech (Fagus sylvatica) is the most commonly cultivated, although there are few important differences between species aside from detail elements such as leaf shape. The leaves of beech trees are entire or sparsely toothed, from 5–15 cm long and 4–10 cm broad. Beeches are monoecious, bearing both male and female flowers on the same plant. The small flowers are unisexual, the female flowers borne in pairs, the male flowers wind-pollinating catkins. They are produced in spring shortly after the new leaves appear. The bark is smooth and light grey. The fruit is a small, sharply three–angled nut 10–15 mm long, borne singly or in pairs in soft-spined husks 1.5–2.5 cm long, known as cupules. The husk can have a variety of spine- to scale-like appendages, the character of which is, in addition to leaf shape, one of the primary ways beeches are differentiated.[2] The nuts are edible, though bitter (though not nearly as bitter as acorns) with a high tannin content, and are called beechnuts or beechmast.

This tree commonly grows with mycorrhizal fungi; we can supply these trees hosting Tuber aestivum.
